Project Description

Encounter is an interactive art installation that offers a unique experience to participants. Using mixed reality modes of interaction, Encounter allows participants to interact with artificial creatures and digital environments, each with unique characteristics and behaviours. Participants act as city planners, shaping the virtual world by placing physical objects on the map. As they do so, they can observe the effects of their decisions on the surrounding environment and creatures. Through this installation, participants can explore mixed reality technology possibilities while engaging with an artistic and imaginative world.

Project Breakdown

Using a smartphone or tablet device with a custom app, participants can learn more about the environment through augmented reality. The app can recognize objects and images, such as creatures and landmarks, and communicate any changes made by the "city planners." This allows participants to have a more immersive experience, as they can see and interact with the environment in more detailed way.

In addition to the app, participants also control their digital avatars in the projection zone through body movements via the Microsoft Kinect. The environment and creatures of this ecosystem respond to their gestures, creating a more interactive and engaging experience. This feature allows participants to feel like they are in the environment, making the experience more enjoyable and memorable.

It is worth mentioning that any changes made by the “city planners” are reflected in the projected view in real time. This means that participants can see the immediate effects of the change.

For this project, my primary focus was developing and programming the user’s digital avatars and immersing them within the digital world to create a unique experience.
